Location: Beverly Park, Los Angeles, CA

I had to pop down to LA, for a charity convention this week. It was fun being back in my old digs. Whenever I have a chance to make it to LA, I stop by some of the jobsites I had previously worked on, as well as new projects – the homes don’t get any bigger than in LA! My old boss, John Finton builds homes for wealthy clientele and celebrities spanning from Malibu, Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, and Santa Barbara, so it’s definitely a sight to see from a development perspective.

One of my friends invited me up to check out current work in Beverly Park- one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Think Denzel Washington, the Saudi Royal Family, Lakers players, etc. (Forbes Article). This was apropos, because this was where I had my first interview to work for Finton (Finton.com), fresh out of college. It was 2008, when all other residential construction had crashed across the nation, and I decided I wanted to derail my future career in finance to go into home building. The luxury sector seemed completely insulated from the economy at the time, since the people building $30m homes aren’t exactly effected by a mortgage crisis.

I drove up Mulholland Drive, and arrived to a beautiful castle like building. I thought I was there- apparently that was just the gatehouse. I drove my little car through the perfectly manicured streets lined by tall shrub screening. I was brought into a 40,000 square foot home that was currently under construction and was asked, “are you sure you want to do this?” That was essentially the extent of my interview, and a month later found myself in a construction trailer in Bel-Air working with about 50 guys that were 20 years my senior. It was awesome.

Now, 8 years later, it was fun being back in the “old hood” to check out a “mini-project.” A resident was expanding his current back yard to include multi-level putting greens that you could golf to, when standing from different levels of the property. He was also installing a skate park for his son. These type or requests are not atypical from Finton’s clientele- the possibilities are endless, when the bank account is. And, they even let me drive the ‘dozer for a quick minute!
