Developing The Design Specification: Light Fixtures

Which brings us to lighting fixtures. I like to start with the most prominent fixtures that are needed, like the statement stair chandelier, or island lighting for the kitchen, because the other fixtures can be molded around these. I usually shop at the following websites for fixtures that correspond to this sale price of home:

Ylighting.com – Wide range of many styles and designers
Arteriorshome.com – Unique lighting unlike many other resources
Restorationhardware.com – Go-to for many lighting needs
RHModern.com – Unique, beautiful modern fixtures, though expensive with longer lead times
Westelm.com –Great value and design for price
Lightinthebox.com – Knock-offs of decent quality

It’s important to look at the dimensions of the fixtures (because they can appear different sizes online), and compare to the space you have. If you are choosing for the stairs, for example, you should measure the distance you have from the ceiling to the landing or center, so you know how far it should fall. I go room by room, and pin the fixtures I like on a Pintrist boad, to make sure they are all cohesive. Then, I make final decisions on fixtures once I have a clear picture of what should go in each location. Once, that is completed, I create a spec page (similar to tile) so that the electrician knows where to put all of the lights, and he makes sure to wire properly:

This avoids confusions when a bunch of boxes arrive on the jobsite, and they don’t know where everything goes. Here are some of the installed light fixtures they have just put in at the Mid-Century Modern Project in Belle Meade, TN:

Light fixtures should be installed after paint, so they don’t get damaged, but with plenty of time in case something is installed incorrectly or gets cracked during shipping. When it’s time for light fixtures, it means we are getting close to finishing, will post pictures of the finished product soon!
